Fortec setup
I just purchased and installed my dish, and trying to pick up a sat. but the only one in the list is AMC 1, and I can't get any others listed, but my question is how do I get this to tune in, Right now I have 70 % signal and 0% quality, What am I doing wrong, This is the first time I have ever messed with FTA. I have installed DTV and DISH and they are easy. I need some help.
Thanks,
Supertom

Whats:
your zip code,
the elevation you used on the dish setting,
the compass setting you're using for T5 to aim your dish.
You need to be on "active" transponder for T5 while aiming the dish.
(11836 is one to try).
Move in baby steps, wait a few seconds to see if you get "quality" indication blip. An 1/8 of an inch out of line and you miss the satellite. It's that touchy...

Your elevation calculates on Sadoun's formula page to:
52.3 elevation, and 183.1 azimuth for T5/IA5.
Now, you need to add about 4 degrees for your magnetic adjustment.
So the real compass heading to point to is 187
Your elevation was close.
Those signal meters only show you that you might be pointed at the right satellite.
Use a good compass. Move your dish to the right (looking from behind it) a bit more, and up the elevation a little bit.
One thing I'll also mention is that the 786v3 might have some stale transponder reading values. I'm not positive, but hasn't this system been replaced by 786NA model?
You might need to update the ROM inside by flashing with a software update from the fortec website... On the 786NA unit I have it helped with some channels on the G10R satellite that were incorrect out of the box.

What kind of serial cable are you using?
THere are regular, and "null modem" serial cables.
The 786 series needs null modem cable.
What are you upgrading the rom with?
From FOrtec website, you should be only putting on channel update:
TP Data - v2.9 ( September 16, 2004)
To put this file on, use channel editing software found on home page of Fortec website.

I used to have the v3 a long time ago. It was a nice receiver, and yes the signal/quality bars are a little unresponsive but i still got it.
Tom you haven't mentioned about your LNB. Universal? Single? Fortec? Check your lnb skew, etc.

Fortec 786V3
The only difference between the 786NA and 786v3 is the TV out connector that was added to 786NA. the 786v3 is used most outside of the usa. Now since you have signal strength of 83 and no quality and you're almost pointed to T5, Chances are that the lnb setting is wrong. Make sure you're using the right LNB. 786 is set to universal lnb. If you're using standard lnb you need to change the settings.
Menu>install>antenna>lnb type>Left or right to change>OK make sure frequency is ok.
make sure the lnb power is on, diseqC is disable...
I do not believe there is any need to update your system. Just make sure you have a working frequency and use it to get signal. See
www.lyngsat.com>> Frequencies>>97 for more
