Yes, that can be true. Some have hosed up their boxes, but many have been sucessful on the other hand, too.
To do the transfer you need the control trasnfer software, the new bin file, and a straight thru (NOT null cable) to connect a Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer to your box.
I have updated my firmware a couple times as Fortec released them, and it worked just fine.
If you don't feel confident, see if you can send the box back to your vendor and have them take care of it for a small fee.
