Linking computer to reciever

I want to us the channel editing software on my Fortec Star 786 NA, I connected them with the proper cable, and downloaded the channel editing software, but they will not comunicate with each other, what am I doing wrong?

I have a 786 as well and found that I had to use a null modem cable for it to work.
