Galaxy 10R in Pennsylvania/Ohio-USA
All,
I'm looking at setting up a FTA in a remote cabin in central Pennsylvania. We don't have a lot of sky to work with but I do have views of 119 W and higher. We want to watch some broadcast TV but we are in a geograghic hole and have no local broadcast channels. We don't want to pay for Dish or Direct since we use the place very little.
Can anyone tell me if Fox, ABC, Pax, etc. stations are broadcasting on Galaxy 10R now and if so, can I get this Sat with a 31 inch dish and Fortec receiver sold here?
Also, how do generators and old fluorescent lights do around FTA systems?
:>
Thanks In Advance!

Looks like FOX, PAX, WB, ABC, UPN locals are FTA on Galaxy 10R See http://www.lyngsat.com/g10r.html
Generators and fluorescent lights have no effect on reception. Do you have power stablizer/conditioner on your generator?

RE: Galaxy 10R in Pennsylvania/Ohio-USA
I use an APC surge suppressor/Battery Backup on our VCR and or DVD and TV from the generator.
I again assumed that would "clean it up" some and protect against spikes.
I am out of luck, so to speak, in regard to the fact that I thought the Galaxy 10R at 126 W was higher in the sky, (my field of view), than 119 W which is a satellite position we had last year with a PPV service. (Dish or Direct, I'm not sure).
I am no navagator so correct me if I'm wrong, but.......If we can barely see 119 W over the horizen of very tall Hemlock trees in this hollow the cabin is in, is the Galaxy 10R Bird lower or higher in the sky?
Dumb question...yes. Bet you'd like to watch us try to find it, too! :>
Thanks in advance!

bad news.... you're going to have trouble. G10R will be further west than the Dish and DirectTV ones, therefore it will be lower in the sky...

Yes, you're going to have major trouble finding G10R. And yes, we would like to watch - very much so... We'll just hide out in the trees with voyeuristic intention...
Hey; here's an idea. Is there anywhere within 300 feet of the building where you think you might have a better view to the satellite? If so, you could mount the dish there - heck, you could even mount it in a tree if necessary; I've done it. Just make sure you run the incoming coax cable through a decent (read "PanaMax") surge protector. And don't use a motor -- it likely wouldn't work with that long a run of cable.

Galaxy 10R in Pennsylvania/Ohio-USA
admin, pmb1010 & Bobkat,
Thanks for getting back to me, bad news or not.
Oh well! I can climb a hemlock but the PA Dept of Natural Resources really frowns on sticking things in their trees. (Like 31 inch dishes), and besides, in winter, with those trees swinging 5 feet in all directions, I might just lose signal!
I still may shoot for PBS broadcasts since it is better than nothing.
PS BobKat, You'll have to ask the PA Game Commision if their is room for both you and them in the trees around our camp! :>
Thanks again for your input!
