So that others can help you, please clarify....
What program (uploader) are you using?
What file are you trying to upload?
What computer OS are you using?
Did program ask for a password?
Have you tested that your cable by extracting data from the receiver using the program editor program?
What are the symptoms when you fail? Ie how far did you get, and what happened?

The uploader program is case sensitive IE: Lifetime is not the same as
lifetime..

What you describe sounds like the pc and receiver are not talking.

Means that either the receiver or the pc program is timing out or the rs232 cable pinout is incorrect.
Try doing a factory reset, then while the receiver shows the language selection menu, try to do the download.

Also the STB name for the Ultra is 'Lifetime Ultra'.

I am going to update my Ultra as well, is RS232 serial cable interchangable with RS232C serial cable? Or they are totally different.

RadioShack has a female/female (PN# 26-230 $6.95) adaptor (called a "gender changer"). Screw it to the back of the Ultra. Now you can use regular 9 pin Male/Female 9 pin serial cable.

They also have the cable, but it is more expensive, and less likely that it would be in stock(26-152 $14.49).
