2 ques. before i buy fta system

i am looking into buying a fta system, but there are a few questions i would like answered before i do so. first, i live in the northeast united states. will i be able to receive channels from europe? second, what does it mean when a channel or signal is encrypted and will i be able to view those channels. thank you

Living northeast, you will be able to view some Atlantic satellites (PAS9 and further East)
Check out the link below for a list of Atlantic Ocean sats.

You can also check out the footprint for each of them to see if it covers your location.
If the channels are encrypted, you won't be able to view them unless the subscription is available and your receiver accepts CAM, then you can subscribe to the service to watch these pay channels.
