New Registered Member and New to Satellites

Hello to everyone!

I am a Desktop Support PC Technican and I am discovering about satellite systems. I just bought a 18" Direct TV dish from Ebay, and I would like to put a PCI Satellite card in my pc to be able to receive satellite programming. I am very new at this and would appreciate any information about setting up a satellite dish, configuring pci satellite card and what satellites to use to get FTA programming. My wife is from the Philippines and I would like to get tv or radio channels for her via satellite. Also if anyone needs help with their pc I can help provide support. I am also a Retired Master Sergeant (US Army) and spent 22 years on active duty defending our country.

Thanks in advance for any help.

an 18" dish will get you a few audio channels and NASA on DIsh 119

You need at least a 30" dish and a KU Band LNB to get most KU Band free to air programming

to start, you will need a larger dish than 18" to get FTA programming.

30" or bigger is necessary.

Here's a good link to read and get some answers to basic questions:

As stated you will need at least a 30" dish. I would highly recommend spending the extra $20.00 and going for the 90cm dish (36"). Second what language does she speak? There is a ton of Spanish language channels out there but most I have found are Mexico, South America and the Cuba area islands. I happen to know Spanish is big in the Phillipinnes.

Consider the DTV dish a learning experience I went all out and bought a KTI 3 lnb DTV dish as I found info on the net that such a dish would work for FTA. Then I found out the truth Mine lays on the back deck along with a Dish 500 dish and a single lnbf dish (not sure if it is DTV or DN). The latter two were given to me. Have thought about putting up the single lnbf dish for the music channels on (I think) 119. But then again I have plenty of music without it.

Talking

those old dishes make great birdbaths if you seal the holes with silicone.

Standard or Universal Ku lnbf will be fine. Linear.

Hey guys,

Now that I'm settled in with my stationary set-up, I'm thinking of getting motorized... and I see that the cheapest motor is the SG2100 (I saw another brand called Motek SG2100 also)...

Is there any major drawbacks to this motor? Such as does the gears wear out after a few years, etc? reliable? motor speed is quick or slow? etc?

Personally I think all these little motors are slow when compared to an actuator. I currently use a SG2100 and have had no issues with it. Have ran it for roughly a year or so now.

Slow is relative, I guess... so how long does it take to move 10 degrees? Are we talking 10 seconds, 30 seconds?
