Bigger Dish

I am looking for a dish that is larger than a dish 500. One that will allow me to receive the same satellites (110 and 119) that dish 500 will but will give me more gain so that I can overcome some of the loss of signal that I get. I want to be able to use the lnbs I use now on the 500 dish. Anyone know of anything that may fit the bill??

The only way I know of would be to put up 2 30" dishes, one pointed at 110 and the other at 119. Or use one 30" dish and saddle the second LNB to the main LNB using tie-wraps or, heaven forbid, duct tape. Channel Master used to make a 24" dish that could be 'modded' to use the Dish500 Y-adapter but it was discontinued.

Dish Network makes the Super Dish. Have not measured one but an oval roughly 30" x 20" Not sure the lnb config as the SD I have has no lnbs on it. If memory serves me correct they have 3 lnbs out front.

I'm told the gain for 119 and 110 is much worse for SuperDiSH 121 than it is for DiSH 500. If anything the gain for 119 would be equal to DiSH 500 (since it's very near the focal point of the reflector) but the gain for 110 would be rather worse than a DiSH 500.

Interstingly, even with all this the DiSH 1000 is worse for all locations than either SuperDiSH.

Get yourself a 80 or 76cm dish with a bracket.

Lightbulb How About an In-line Amplifier?

Rather than buy a new and larger dish, why not just boost signal strength with an in-line amplifier? Sadoun sells one. It's listed on the splitter's page. The info on it says it boost the signal by 12 to 20 db, and works in the 950 to 2400 MHz range. I'm interested, too, because I've been having some signal strength problems myself for satellite 110. For some reason the channels in the 9400 range seem to be weaker than they used to be. I don't know why. The system info page says my status is "good", but some channels are breaking up anyway.

My hardware: Dish301 receiver, 20" Dish. Setup is five years old.

Depends. An in-line amplifier boosts signal and noise equally. If your signal is buried in background/electrical noise it still will be, no matter how much you amplify. A larger dish improves the signal-to-noise ratio (assuming it is pointed correctly) to lift the signal above the noise.

A properly functioning LNB has sufficient output to overcome normal coax losses back to your receiver. Typically you use an inline amplifier to compensate for longer than normal coax runs, or aging coax if you're too lazy to replace it.
