Fortec says'bad signal' ?
I must be missing something, installed winegard 33" with invacom QPH031 connected to a Fortec 786na. All plumb and level, zeroed in on Telstar5. Signal =78 Quality=99 All I can get is the music stations.All tv stations say 'bad signal' When I check it's reading Quality= 99 all on tp 19. Did I miss something during the install?

Compare the satellite transponder list to lyngsat.
---> http://www.lyngsat.com/ia5.html
Make sure the transponder data is accurate and up to date. I don't think the Fortec 786 is a blind scan receiver. It isn't in RADIO mode, is it?

no, it's not in radio mode, I scanned each transponder listed. came up with 267 tv chanels? -some read 'scrambled signal' and the rest, except for 203, it's an ad for adult subscription, read 'bad signal'. The radio chanels work fine, except for the scrambled ones. the best quality signal is on tp19 -sig=87 qual=99
I tried changing the LNB settings but than I lose all. It's as though the lnb isn't 'seeing' the whole dish, but there isn't any adjustment that I can see.no way to set F/D or anything. Im stumped. Any ideas?

If your quality is 99 % then the LNB is "seeing" as much of the dish as it needs - no problem there. Are you sure you're on the right satellite? Compare the transponder data for the one channel you do get to lyngsat.

checked three tp's. all the numbers match. the only thing missing is the
video and audio numbers. just pid0000. in the morning I'll replace the coax, maybe it has a bad spot . if i cant get a picture on t5, what other sat should i try for? I need to know if this setup works before it drives me nuts. Ive gone through the alignment so many times i'm dreaming about it.

Well, you could shoot for AMC 4 at 101 degrees west. It has far fewer active KU transponders and a somewhat stronger signal than T5. Use the transponder with the parameters 12,120 MHz, VER and 30,000 SR.

Well, I feel kinda dumb. went out and bought a new compass........
over shot my mark and was locked onto Galaxy3c. Not much on here except for BellExpress. Don't understand the signal and quality while I was on the wrong satellite, quality should have been '0'. I haven't moved the dish, too dark out, but I'll do it in the morning.
Thanks for your help, I was starting to go a little crazy.

I kind of figured you hit the wrong bird right from the start. If you're getting ExpressVu FTA radio channels you're locked onto Nimiq 91, not G3C.
--> http://www.lyngsat.com/91west.html
Its easy to hit the wrong satellite. That's why you should always compare transponder data to lyngsat to verify a known channel. Many satellites share the same transponder parameters. That's why you will get signal and quality readings; the receiver doesn't know what satellite its receiving; it will only bring in the active channels on that particular transponder. So the only way to verify where you're at is to compare channels.

One further thought...
Make sure you are using the LINEAR output on the LNB. If you are picking up Nimiq 91 then that's a circular polarity satellite. If you're using the CIRCULAR LNB output you will never hit T5 -- its a linear polarity bird.

Another further thought... :mozilla_laughing:
Drop your elevation down about 3 to 4 degrees and move the dish a bit to the right as referenced from you being positioned behind the dish.
