FTA Purchase

I am currently overseas in Kuwait. I am interested in getting an FTA to pick up some channels around this area and when I get home (USA).

I would like to know if there are any considerations I should look at in using the receiver when I get back home. In other words, will any receiver I buy be just as useful in both locations, or are there limitation by area or reciever that I should be looking at. I don't want to buy something that is useful here in Kuwait but not as good when I fet home.

I am thinking things like PAL vs NTSC and things like that.

On a separate question, I have a Goldsat 9400 FTA here with me. The dish I have is currently pointed at Hotbird. It was recieving channels until someone reset the reciever to factory setting. For the life of me, I can't fiqure out how to program the channels back in. I have spent alot of time reading, but just can't get it.

My question is, does anyone out there have this reciever that might be able to help me. I have done exhaustive searches on the internet with no results. That is what led me here. I followed some links for Blind Search. I still want to get a new "current" model FTA, but would love to get this working in the mean time.

Thanks in advance for anything you can help me with.

Well, I 've never seen a Goldsat receiver but all receivers are fairly similar in setup. Generally what you must do is:

1) select your satellite; usually in MENU under INSTALLATION submenu SATELLITE EDIT.

2) select the type of LNB you have; universal (10,600 MHz) or standard (10,750); this should be indicated on the LNB itself.

3) make sure the transponder list in the receiver is current; compare to www.lyngsat.com and ADD or EDIT TRANSPONDERS accordingly. You must add or edit three things: frequency, polarity and symbol rate. These are given in the lyngsat charts.

4) do a SCAN SATELLITE on the receiver and the channels should come back if your dish hasn't moved.

I don't know which Hotbird you have your dish pointed at but here's a link to one of them ---> http://www.lyngsat.com/hb1.html

Most new receivers have automatic PAL NTSC conversion on their analog video output so you do have to worry about that. The world of DVB is digital so it doesn't really matter for those analog systems.

Also, most new receivers are designed for 110-240 v input so you do have to worry about different power systems either... so any FTA receiver you purchase like fortec, pansat, coolsat you will be good to go anywhere in the world.

Thanks Guys...

bobkat.....It seems know one has ever seen this IRD. I have searched the internet over and over and can find nothing. As for the settings, it seems as though the procedure you are outlineing is what I have been doing. I guess I am just missing something.

You asked what HOTBIRD I am pointing at....The way I read lyngsat is that 1/2/3/4/6 are all at 13 E. Am I reading that wrong? At any rate, I am pointed to the hotbird that is carring AFN. I know the dish is still pointed correctly because I get AFN crystal clear on the Power VU IRD.

DruzeTito...Is there a "not" missing in your first sentence??? It seems as though you start out saying I am good, but then say I should worry???

Thanks for your help guys.

Any recommendations on my new purchase?

Yes, it looks like all the Hotbirds are at 13 E; talk about being crowded...

Anyway, the other thing to make sure of is that the LNB POWER is turned ON; an important but often overlooked setting. Also make sure the cable from the dish is connected to the IF IN or DIGITAL IN; some folks connect it to ANT IN, another common mistake.
