There is one FTA channel, I am aware of - BVN TV, - off 97W satellite.
For more european channels from that satellite, such as Setanta Sports and Euronews, you will need to subscribe to Globecast. Check their website, as well check Dish network and dIRECtv, international packages. You will need 90cm dish and FTA receiver for FTA, or same 90cm dish with Globecast receiver for subscription.

Portuguese TV.
Okay, there is a Portuguese channel more or less next to the BVN channel that was mentioned above.
Most people, of course, are totally unimpressed with this channel, duh, because it's Portuguese. However, I like it because it is totally free. Dish network charges around $30.oo per month for the Brazilian plan -- only about 2-3 channels -- and no Dish Latino channels (many channels) so it's a real ripoff compared to Dish Latino. And it compares well even to Globo (probably South America's best channel) because there are few commercials (it's apparently financed by the Portugal government). Radio Television Portugal International is a full-service station which, of course, is mainly for news, but it carries soaps, games (price-is-right type games), some educational, and it also is one of the few that carries full soccer games -- the last two I saw were in Guimaraes, Port, and Dusseldorf, Germany -- a match which is perhaps not carried on any other (free) channel here. Well, this being said, it is, alas, totally in Portuguese (second audio is Portuguese radio) with no closed captioning available (that I know of) or other English subtitles except on very few programs. Well, this may not impress you that you should learn Portuguese, however it is a very latin based language and is something like inbetween French and Spanish (has the same accent marks as French), and the knowledge or which couldn't hurt at all. Also, more people speak Portuguese than speak either French or German. Also, we can't receive satellite 30 West (Hispasat -- Spain) here in Phoenix, so Portugual is still one of our best European stations. By the way, we are getting Radio France on 97 West now. Also, our best full-time free French speaking station is from China on 95 West. Yes, well, it's not what we would call France, Canada, or Europe as such . . . duh, but it's an interesting channel and couldn't hurt your French knowledge. Also, we are getting some France (in french) news on 79 West (New York Network), and France 24 (English) on 97 west -- Mhz Worldview channel. I hope this improves your European channels somewhat. Okay, that's all on this one. Bye, -d |
