GlobeCast World TV to go MPEG4
I wasn't sure where to post this, so here it is.
GlobeCast in the USA wants the start of the transition to MPEG4 to begin as early as this coming autumn and winter. They also talk about lots of other things in relation to GlobeCast World TV. They will be able to stuff alot more channels on each transponder then. Maybe that is when they will switch to Nagra2 also.

If this is true, (I don't know if there is actually DVB receivers for MPEG-4, and thet will probably be expensive...) it could be the end of FTA in NA.
On IA5, if PIT Telecom stay with MPEG-2, there will only be 2 tps with FTA channels viewable: 11836V and 12177V...it would be catastrophic for our hobby... #-o

I don't think so at all. On the contrary, I think the opposite will happen and MPEG-4 will open new doors for more FTA channels. It will be less expensive to launch a TV channel on satellite then. Thus, you will see many companies and stations going to satellite to deliver their programming.
MPEG-4 allows more content for the same amount of bandwidth as MPEG-2. That means, more channels sharing the same transponder.
I think, then, more European, Middle Easterns, and Asian channels, will enter the NA market. For example, in the Middle East, the last count there were more than 140 Arabic FTA channels available. We only get around 20 of these channels in NA.
Also, Hotbird and Astra have 100s of FTA channels. How many of these do we get in NA? very few to none. Imagine when it becomes cheaper to deliver these channels in Europe and NA (using MPEG-4).

Does DVB-S2 standard cover mpeg4? I also think this might be a good thing as it will open room for more bandwidth and space to be used. I think right now we are all scared that it will make our current eqipment obsolelete, but I'm sure new equipment will be available before we know it.

New equipment to buy...that's the scary thing....Our receivers are not compatible with MPEG-4.
Does DVB receivers compatible with MPEG-4 actually exist on the market? and what is their prices? I believe that the first generation of these new equipment will be very expensive...! :mozilla_frown:

...and, if in the future, these channels are transfered to Ka-Band, we will have to change our LNB and maybe dish too...!

As we all know converting to a new standard will take a long time (sometimes years as the case with HDTV). So, don't worrry about your existing equipment yet. Some people are still using ANALOG receivers from 15 years ago :mozilla_laughing:

Are there any MPEG - 4 Receivers in development
Are there any receivers in development? Usually new products have a HIGH pricetag for the first 2 years or so.

They are trying to protect their programming. People who are stealing their programming will care very much so.

It's very simple this will help to keep my favorite channels from disappearing, maybe even more channels will be added to each language group like the article in my first post stated. Well anyway this is the beginning of the end for those who illegally view Globecast's channels and they are already starting to panic on their forums. :mozilla_tongue: That's what I say to them.
