    Tips for used DN receivers?

I see quite a few ads for used equipment locally. Lots of 301s and others. What should I look out for if I want to pick up a cheap box and have it subscribed?

I'm looking for an inexpensive way to get DN programming without having to commit to contracts, or equipment lease fees.

Have you considered "new" (refurb) DishNow?

I've been able to find two 301 DishNow units (haven't seen a 3900 yet) for my setup.

    Advantages over used, non-DishNow, units:
A bit less of a gamble on the hardware/authorization.
No card version/swap worries (at least for now).
Pick your package(s), including no package, as often as day by day. (no change fee).

    Disadvantages:
    Single tuner per sub.
Missing some programming options/features. (limited packages, blackouts, no locals, no regional sports)
    MPEG2 (can't last forever)
Card swap, someday, seems inevitable if the product continues.
It could go away for other (business) reasons.
Slightly higher upfront (50-100) compared to the better used prices I've seen.
GreenDot fees or $40 cards, no other options.
EZ remote doesn't have alot of features (I've replaced both of mine).

I've saved money with DishNow because I don't watch PayTV every day, particularly the high cost package(s) - but every once in a while it is very nice.

See my prior post on DishNow:
DishNow as an addition to FTA and OTA setup

Sadoun's DishNow page links to a nice SatelliteGuys thread on the subject as well.

Get the receiver number and call dishnetwork to see if the receiver can be activated. If you're using DP lnb's make sure you buy a DP receiver (3 digits model) or buy a dp adapter.

If the previous owner of a used DN receiver owes the company back balances, that is always carried over with and subsequent owners of the box.

So, I wouldn't recommend buying a used receiver from a private buyer unless you are sure 100% (you have to call DN to verify no balance on the receiver). Otherwise, you will get stuck with a useless receiver.

We are offering factory refurbished and authorized DishNOW receivers for $49
