Can I use my DishNetwork dish/LNBF to receive FTA channels?

Yes & No

YES: Since Dishnetwork use small dishes (18"-24") and circular polarity LNBS, you can only receive the FTA channels from their satellites. However, you will not be able to receiver the encrypted channels. For those channels you will need to susbscibe and pay your monthly fee to Dish Network to be able to receiver the channels. We do not condone illigal reception of encrypted signal.

Anything with an is FTA. Mostly music stations

NO: Since the other satellites (i.e. Telstar 5, Galaxy 3C, etc) use much weaker signal transmission, and linear polarization, you will need a bigger dish (30"+) and a linear type LNBF like the type available here:

Your bigger dish should work fine. You will need a circular polarity LNBF.

>can I use the dish for both receivers?
Yes, you can, but you will only be receiving signal from one satellite.

>Do I need another LNBF?
Yes you do.

If you can, the best way is to have two separate dishes. Otherwise, put an HH motor to move the dish between different satellites.

Nimiq1

I used a $15 dish network dish and LNBF from Ebay.
Created two new antennas, single LNB, lo 1120, 14v skew on for anttenna 3, 18v skew on for antenna 4.

Lots of music. I picked Nimiq 'cause they have more jazz.

I just acquired a small directv dish and I want to point it to Echostar 7 (119w) for some music channels. My question is, when I aim the dish, should i not worry about the polarization since a cannot rotate it? calculations tell me 40 degrees positive polarization.

The angle of a fixed dish is in the mounting hardware. Nimiq 1 being at 91 degrees, it's almost straight; -1.2 where I am. The mount doesn't just move left to right, in adjusts in an arc that uses the requisite angle.
I can't find a link that shows it well. The dish will be rotated on the fixed mount. Here'show to calculate the angle:

Wait a minute here.. something is not clear here. Lets say that I hook up my small dish to my fortec star DVB reciever, set the lnb type to single, lo frequ 11250, and then i should put 14v skew? Then I am able to adjust polarization with the remote. This is what I suppose is circular lnb? the dish doesn't need physical adjusting. Am i right?

The dish is mechanically adjusted once on install; -2 Degrees in my case.
The LNB skew determines left hand or right hand polarization. I set up two antennas for 14v and 18v for left and right. Someone who knows more than I will be along to correct me if I did it worng and just licked out.

Here is a link to calculating azimuth ( East to West), elevation (up and down) and polarization, turning the disk like the hands of a clock.
Left hand frame, towards the bottom.

Then can you rotate the LNB in it's mount if not the whole dish?

Guys -- small DirecTV, DishNetwork and ExpressVu dishes do not need adjusts for polarization - period. I have mounted round circular polarity dishes on bizarre angles - even upside down - and they still work fine. When you make the rotational adjustment as Wayne is talking about that is for dual (or triple) LNB dishes that point at more than one bird at a time; what you are doing is compensating for the elevation differences on the arc for the multiple birds the dish is pointing at - whew . That was a killer sentence.

Skew does not apply to circular ( L/R) polarity.

Hi, I'm very new to this FTA stuff...
I have an 18" dish network lnb/dish pointed at Nimiq for ExpressVu's music channels, but I can't figure out how to set up my ViStar 2000 to see the satellite. Anyone familiar with this receiver? I can't even get a signal. Thanks!!!
