Dish Network is one of the most popular TV systems in the United States
I have an opportunity to purchase a Dish 522 PVR Receiver locally. I would like to use it as a PVR for my extended basic cable and FTA. Is it possible? Or is it only good for a Dish Network subscription?
If it is only good for a DN subscription, can I just replace my original, leased receiver? Do I need to call DN to "activate" it? My DN subscription is current.
I don't know for certain on using it as a PVR for your basic cable, but I would be willing to bet 100:1 that you can't use it for anything but DN. And no, you can't just replace your existing leased receiver you have to call DN first.

Thanks for the response. I searched a bit more after I posted here, and it seems you are correct: The DVR functionality is only for DN. The technical justification for this is the lack of an encoding circuit. It basically just captures the video stream off the satellite.
No, it will not be lost, you will actually be able to continue to view the recordings anytime you wish. When you turn on the receiver it will try to locate the satellites at which point you should just press the PVR button and it will provide access to the recorded programs. Look at it like when your satellite goes out due to rain fade. It is the same thing.
