Do they have to be so cheap?

The only people to watch their programming now will be Croatians. Whatever happened to the good 'ol spirit of shortwave?

they even announced this on DNEVNIK

on the side note I got an email from EURO WORLD
they are working on bringing HRT to Canada
they said either thru Globecast (globecast getting a licence for canada, maybe????) or thru local canadian provider
Hopefully it will be thru bell expressvu
and to finish up, they said it will be available in canada by Feb 1st

__________________________________________________ __________

HRT - CROATIAN NATIONAL RADIO TELEVISION TO BEGIN OFFERING THE MOST ATTRACTIVE CROATIAN PROGRAMMING FOR NORTH AMERICA INCLUDING TOP CROATIAN SPORTS, MOVIES AND SERIES AS PAY TV.

Zagreb, 29th December 2004: HRT – Croatian National Radio Television in Partnership with HRT-America Inc., a EURO-WORLD NETWORK company, are announcing the end of the free-to-air broadcast for North America. The new Partnership will provide the Croatian viewers in North America with the most attractive HRT programming, directly from Croatia.

In order to be able to offer the very best of HRT in North America, HRT will partically encrypt (12 hours per day) the North American programming “Picture of Croatia“ and “Voice of Croatia“ starting 1st February 2005, with the goal to fully encrypt as of 1st March 2005.

By encrypting the program, HRT will be able to manage the Television rights for the most popular shows and sports events, including highly rated Croatian movies, exciting series such as the first Croatian soap-opera (Villa Maria), the Croatian soccer league along with the Croatian National team matches, other major sporting events which have excellent Croatian athlets like skiing, tennis, swimming as well as more music shows such as “Za srce i dusu“, “Lijepom Nasom“, folklore and much more – everything HRT viewers have been asking for during the past several years of the free-to-air broadcast.

To experience Croatia of today and to subscribe to HRT’s programming for North America “Picture of Croatia“ and “Voice of Croatia“ by the 1st February 2005, Croatian viewers will need a GlobeCast WorldTV satellite system, including a satellite dish, a satellite receiver and an authorized smartcard in order to decode the Television & Radio programs.

All current viewers of “Picture of Croatia“ and listeners of “Voice of Croatia“ who have GlobeCast WorldTV satellite receivers with Nagravision compatible slot (as recommended by HRT over the past 3 years) would only need to purchase an authorized smartcard.

For only $15.99 a month the very best of HRT is available in all Croatian homes throughout North America via GlobeCast WorldTV’s Direct-to-Home satellite platform. Viewers interested in receiving further programming and subscription information may call toll-free 1-888-988-5288 or visit: www.hrt-america.com.

About HRT – (Hrvatska Radiotelevizija)
The free-to-air broadcasting of Picture of Croatia started May 30,th 2001 with only three hour of broadcast daily as a joined effort of HRT (Croatian Radio Television), the National Public Broadcaster of the Republic of Croatia, the Croatian Government and Croatian Heritage Foundation (Matica iseljenika). Today, Picture of Croatia broadcasts 8 hours daily and it is also shown in Latin America, Australia and New Zealand with the aim of informing Croatians all around the world of the current events in Croatia.

PICTURE OF CROATIA offers information on Croatian history, culture, and heritage as well as news, sports and entertainment programs of interest to Croatians living abroad. The channel consists of an 8-hour block of original Croatian programming broadcasted from 8pm to 4am ET (5pm to 1am PT) followed by two rebroadcasts of the initial 8-hours block.

VOICE OF CROATIA is Picture of Croatia's full-time companion international radio channel specifically for the Croatian population living abroad. Focusing on social, economic and cultural issues, Voice of Croatia keeps listeners informed about current events and culture events back home.

HRT-America broadcasted in Canada!

I would like to clarify the information concerning HRT's programming in Canada.

We are currently in the processes of finalizing an agreements with a Canadian company to distribute HRT in Canada. Once the agreement is signed, HRT will most likely launch in Canada with a local provide (such as Bell ExpressVu or Rogers Cable) by the end of the first quarter 2005...not by February 1st, 2005.

In the meantime, you may subscribe to HRT via the GlobeCast WorldTV sat-system if you have a US address. You may order the sat-equipment & subscriber to HRT on-line at www.hrt-america.com.

I'll be in-touch once I have additional information to share with the group.

The schedule to encrypt HRT in North America:
Feb. 1st to Feb. 28th, 12pm to 12am - Encrypted | 12am to 12pm Free-to-air.

March 1st 2005: 21 hours encrypted
June 1st, 2005: 24 hours | fully encrypted

If you have any further questions or require additional information, please don't hesitate to let us know. We remain available for further assistance.

I got couple questions
1. So HRT in Canada will be available by end of April??
2. How come you are not sure what company it's going to be? You are obviously negotiating with either Rogers or Bell ExpressVu
3. Right now program goes 8hrs then two repeats. You mentioned that Feb 1st it will go 12hr free, then 12hrs encrypt. Is free part going to be different than the encrypted one (from Feb 1st to March 1st) or this is just the test

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the questions!

1. Yes, if all goes well HRT will be "officially" available in Canada by the end of April.

2. EURO-World Network through our Canadian business Partner is currently negotiating with both Rogers & Bell Expressvu to carry the HRT program in Canada. We are hopeful to secure an agreement with both providers, but at this point it is not 100% sure.

I will keep you informed as things develope.

3. No, the 12/12 hours program will be the same. Depending on the success of the project will decide if HRT goes to a full 24hrs a day new programming schedule. With the Croatian communities support throughout North America, I am confident that this will happen by January 2006, the latest.

In the meantime, the program will remain 3 x 8 hrs but with much more attractive programming during the 8hrs program blocks.

The 12hrs free-to-air period during the month of February is to provide the current viewers who have not yet gotten the proper GlobeCast equipment to continue to view "part" of the HRT programming while getting the proper / required equipment to decode HRT as of March 1st.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. You may send me an e-mail at info@hrt-america.com

The shame is there are a lot of us non Croatians who enjoy the channel just to see the country side but cannot understand a word therefore not worthwhile to pay for it. Guess we'll be locked out for the profit potential.

i got one more question for HRT-America

currently HRT is using very high compression which results in very blocky picture when fast movements are shown. This was totally torelable while the channel is free.

Is HRT going to use lower compression=higher quality of picture once subscription starts? (better be, haha)

Thanks

Yea they do that to save bandwidth because more bandwidth = more dough to shell out.

Otherwise, I don't know if they are going to do that.. its probably too technical to put it on thier website or something.

they better do that. right now when soccer is on, sometimes it just makes me wanna cry. so much pixellization.

once they go pay tv, they better change that as they're gonna be showing more sport(what they say )

Considering that Globecast has all of their other subscrition based channels cramed in 8-10 channels per transonder, I doubt they will be giving HRT any more bandwidth.

I have been watching this channel too. I believe that this problem has to do with their mpeg encoder - apparently it is not doing a very good job converting from analog to digital. RTV21 had also this problem for a while when they started transmission 2 years ago but then a lot of people called them and i know for a fact that they bought a new mpeg2 encoder - now picture is crystal clear
