Preparing for new Twinhan Install...

Ok, I am trying to prepare for my Twinhan delivery and trying to get everything ready so I can get FTA working.

My Checklist

1- Pentium 3 800 mHZ, 640 RAM, XP, all updated
2- 18 inch dish on portable tripod with Fortec Univesal LNBF

Is there any software or codecs I need to install prior to installing the twinhan? DivX, Xvid etc...

I know its not much of a checklist. Just trying to be prepared.
Thanks

Well, with the dish and LNBF you have, you aren't going to see too much. The dish is too small for the linear satellites, and the LNBF isn't the proper type (ie it's linear) to receive the very few FTA signals you might find on DBS sats.
Now, the question that everyone gets asked here........
What are you wanting to receive with your system?

Ah shoot I thought the dish would be fine but the Fortec Star LNBF (FSKU-v) is not the proper one either. Well FTA says there are thousands of free channels. I want to see whats out there, foreign countries, news maybe, what ever is free, I don't care. Just think it will be fun seeing what is available, don't even care if its a different language, haahaaha

How big a dish do I need then? 30 inch?

Thanks

Re the LNBF the FSKU-v should be OK for the linear FTA channels. It's a universal, meaning it does low band in addition to the regular 12.2-12.7 GHz Ku band used by sats over the US. Only problem is you need to send a 22KHz signal to get the regular high band, which I think could limit your options with respect to using switches. A standard lnbf just does the regular band. The DBS (DTV/DISH) sats use a band higher than the regular band, and the signals are also circular polarization and have wider spacing. There are a few channels over the atlantic that require the universal lnbf. So you should be OK with that LNBF I'd think.
Re the dish, for Ku band, a 30" dish is the minimum, but should work, but a 36" would be better. Of course for C-band you'd need a 6' dish or larger.

What does the low band mean?
When I look at Telstar 5 on Lyngsat, it lists two groupings of transponders one in the 3000-5000 range and then others in the 11000-12700 range. I have a regular KU LNB and I can get the 11000 range transponders and channels. Now can I receive the 3000-5000 range channels or does that require the Universal LNB u r speaking about? Or am I totally off base and those are C-band or something?

My setup is a 30 inch Dish and a regular KU lnb.

Those are C-band frequencies, so you were correct.

On satellites like T5 (IA5) , the freqs in the 3700-4200 range are C-band, while the freqs in the 11700-12200 range are the regular Ku.
When people talk about the low band that can be received by a Universal LNBF, they are not talking about C band, but instead they are talking about the 11200-11700 band that is found on many non-CONUS sats. Ie look at http://www.lyngsat.com/pas9.html , and you will see a block of KU freqs below 11700, which can not be received with a standard KU LNB. (Actually, it is possible that the LNB is capable, but most receivers are not capable of tuning in the range that the lnb would send them up the coax)
A universal LNB will NOT allow you to receive the C-band freqs in the 3700-4200 range. For this, you need first of all a much bigger dish, and you will need a C/Ku feedhorn, like a CoRotor-2 or something similar to that, with both a C-band and KU-band LNB installed.
