Hi Iron City:

You can try for Galaxy 3C at 95 degrees west - almost the same as T5 (97 degrees) as G3C has a much stronger signal than T5. There is only CCTV 4 and CCTV 9 Chinese channels on this satellite that are FTA: data is:

frequency = 11,780 MHz
polarity = HOR
symbol rate = 20,760 ks/s
FEC = 3/4

Another one to try is AMC 4 (formerly GE 4) - it is exactly where DirecTV's main satellite is ( 101 degrees west) so your FTA dish will point in the very same direction and elevation. Data is:

frequency = 11,807 MHz
polarity = HOR
symbol rate = 4,000 ks/s
FEC = 3/4

The only FTA channel on that is 3ABN religious network.

For more exciting info ----> http://www.lyngsat.com/g3c.shtml

and ---> http://www.lyngsat.com/amc4.shtml

Keep us informed...

Kat, sorry to keep you in suspense for so long, unfortunately no news to report. Earlier this summer, I was wondering if it was possible that my DirectTV was shooting through some trees and my FTA was being blocked so I've hired someone to come in and top my trees off...yes, this is getting crazy. So I've been kind of waiting for that. Once he does that, I'm going to try again, if it doesn't work, I'm going to take digital pics of the whole setup, and maybe the forum can help me virtually!! You rock by the way, thanks for the help in the past. -IC

Kat, by the way, any suggestions on sats I can try that are almost straight south? my view is completely unobstructed that way. Thanks.

Well, I guess you could try AMC 6 -- it's pretty far south. Linky --->http://www.lyngsat.com/amc6.shtml

Not much on there - just a couple of locals.

It is possible for you to get a DirecTV signal through partial tree growth but not with Telstar 5 -- DirecTV's satellites are much more powerful. This could be the problem.

misery loves company?????
I have spent 3 days trying to find T-5 and lock it in. I have been doing dish installs and up-keep for approx. ten years and this is my first failure. My greatest mistake was to take on a task started by the customer and past to me when he got tired of the hassel. I may have other issue's as the result of some pre-made mistakes on his part.
Replaced all the RG-6. I measure a constant 14.3vdc at the LNB. Is this normal?? Is cable length critical??

Yes, 14 volts at the LNB is normal - anything between 13 and 18 volts is OK; Cable length is not too critical - I've run up to 300 feet and more without issues. The key to aligning these things is patience and VERY SLOW SLIGHT movements when moving the dish. Also, make sure the L.O. frequency of the LNB is matched in the receiver settings; also make sure to select an active transponder (such as 12,152 or 12,177 MHz) when searching. By the way, ordinary signal meters won't lock onto Telstar 5; use a Birdog or that new Channel Master one -- or drag a small TV and the receiver out to the dish. Try pulling the LNB back as far back as it will go in the cradle -- this can make a big difference.

Good Luck

what a life !!!!!!

Still have not got the durn thing going. Been a time thing. Lots of service call's this past week. Thank goodness for thunder storm's and power system's that go blink in the nite.
Replaced four DSS recviers and two LNB'S and numerous grd. block's and F-connector's.
The one I loved was an RCA HDTV DSS all in one reciever. Dealer had taken three different unit's out to customer and still no TV. Customer said it all started when Directv sent him a new card for unit #1. After that all he could get was no access card across bottom of screen. Direct told him the card reader was bad in the unit so dealer truck's out a new one. Same thing again as was number 3. Turn's out that customer had inserted card wrong and dealer people had used the original wrong card placement as an example in the next two unit's. Put the durn card in right and took my money and ran. Best not tell the customer what the problem was. Never make the customer look bad!!! Love dealing with the public in spite of some hazard's. Been dog bitten twice had to back down snake's under houses and bit once by a pot bellied pig that was hiding behind a entertainment center in a dark corner. I was shore nuff having fun.
Will tackle T-5 monster again tomorrow. I will win!!!
WOW, I got long winded. Moderator will most likely kill this one.

Try this way to lock the signal, Guaranteed

Iron City,

The problem you have is probably too trust to the frequencies you find in lyngSat.com. Due to frequency shift of your LNBF and/or your satellite receiever, the fre 12177 post in lyng is not necessarily exactly the one in your system. Try this way and it guarantees to lock the signal:
(1) Adjust the dish to get the maximum signal reading while at the same thing, to get a maximum STEADY quality reading (such as 45-50, but not jumping around from 0 to 100) for a strong TP, even though the satellite is not locked.
(2) In the receiver, input the SR=23000 (as in your example), freq as 12177, 12180, 12185, ... each time for 2 seconds, see if it locks the signal. Try 23000+(or -30) range, to get best reading of quality when locking the satellite. It will.
(3) Calculate the freq differene, such as 23020(final best reading)-23000(in lyng)=+20. Add +20 to all the TP freqs found in lyng and enter into your receiver. No change for SR.
(4) You have locked all the TP channels.
(5) Do a final adjustment of the dish for the best reading for all TPs.

Best Wishes,
Zhu

Sorry. There're typos in the numbers in my previous post. Here is the corrected one:

WHOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did it! I'm writing this from my rooftop (go go 802.11 ;-) to report, that I actually pulled in a signal from AMC5. I was screwing around with the elevation, after aligning the az, looked in at the TV and the bars were yellow! I almost fell off the roof when I saw it! I'm sure my neighbors think I'm nuts since I was yodeling for about 5 minutes on my roof... My goal is T5 but this is a great first step to proving to me that the equipment actually works.

Kat thank you so much for sticking through this with me. You're right, it must be the trees that I can't get to T5. Even though I can get DirecTV at the same (almost) azimuth, amazing the difference in sig strength. Thanks again to all.

Fired up from Pittsburgh!

-IC

PS I'll let you know if I ever do pull in T5, not sure I want to watch Salt Lake City's PBS station forever...

sorry Kat, you're not off the hook yet :wink:, I still need to pull in T5! Pack your stuff .

I did cut down what I thought would be the offending limb, line of sight looks fairly clear now. Tried to pull in T5 again but no luck. I think my next step will be to keep pulling in other sats closer to T5 and see what happens. One thing I noticed is that my sat finder was very helpful for AMC5 but with T5 so close to DirecTV it seems like DirecTV dominates the signal making it hard to use the finder.
