Twinhan 1030 - cant get any satellite, 80% signal 0% Quality

I just got a Twinhan 1030, 36" fortec dish, 0.4db universal LNB, running VisionDTV, MT, or progdvb all give 80% signal and no quality, and no picture, no free stations nothing. I cant get the dish pointed to the correct sat, and scanning all neaby sats p[roduces no results. Do I have a bad card?

I have a cheapo sat meter, and have peaked the dish at several strong birds (101, 110, 119). I live at 40 N 110 W, so these are the 3 strongest signals that I get. Without a motor, which is in the mail, having a hard time finding a signal. Have tried scanning for the birds in MT, but get Loccking...., then NO SIGNAL.

Since I am new to this I would have thought the users guide for the card would have been a little more descriptive. Is there a good guide for setting up a FTA system, showing the best bird to get the thing running, etc.

Try downloading progfinder to help you locate satelittes. Make sure you are selecting an active transponder (the one that has porgramming on it all the time). Make sure you give it 5-10+ second each time you move your dish for the program to try and lock in on it.

Don't pay too much attention to the signal strength (it will give signal strength even if you are pointing to the ground).

First time is always the toughest, but after that it gets easier.

I have ordered a DSS type LNB (L/R polarization), hoping this will allow me to pick up 119. Seems like an FTA LNB will not pick up even the NASA channel on 119. Only get a red bar under the signal and no quality in VisionDTV.

It "can" pick up NASA with a linear lnb, but you may have to fiddle with polarity and dish postion a bit, as it is a bit flakey. The fact that you aren't getting much in the way of signal though makes me think you may be setting up the lnb properties wrong. What parameters were you using for LO and transponder freq. And what lnb type, etc. Signal strength shouldn't be your problem, the problem should be interference with other signals since you are using a linear lnb instead of circular. You are right though, that it should be much easier once you get the circular lnb, although NASA is probably the only video you'll receive.

I was using setup2 (universal lnb) in VisionDTV, and that may have been what was wrong. I then used a custom seting as follows (from the DSS Canada dot ca forum):

LNB Power: ON
LNB Type: Custom
LNB Freq 1: 0
LNB Freq 2: 11250
22 kHz Tone: Disable
Tone Burst: Disable
Data Burst: Disable
Diseqc: Disable

I am still not getting a green bar on the signal and 0% quality. I now have a motor, and am going to try some more. Sounds like it will take some tinkering to get it to work.

You were probably right the first time. The 11250 is only if you are using a circular DBS lnbf. I said your lnbf "can" receive NASA TV because I've done it using a regular 10750 LNB, which is slightly different from your "universal" lnbf, but I stil think it should work. The freq of the NASA signal is out of range according to the specs, but the lnbs receive well past their published range. And actually, I wasn't using the VisionDTV software that came with the card either (I was using DVBAPPS), but I think that the VisionDTV software should work, unless it won't let you tune out of range.
I assume that you had something like 9750/10600 for the LO freqs when you used the universal setting?
Also, I assume that you used the transponder with data consistent with the NASA feed? On my program, it's transponder 6 (12297,20000). After you select that transponder, make sure that you hit "apply", because I don't think the signal meter will work until you hit apply.
If that doesn't work, you might try the opposite polarity. I know that it seems like H vs V shouldn't make any difference when you're looking at a circular signal, but I've read reports of people who were able to receive much better by playing with the polarity.
