TV Fanatic...
G'day Mates,
Greetings from Far Western Maryland, in the mountains named Allegany, in the States United in North America.
I have for so many years wanted to receive Satellite TV via c-band, but I never had made the $5000.00 investment. (Besides my wife says no BUD!)
Four years ago we signed onto Directv and finally I had a Satellite Dish. (Now it is to expensive to keep it.) I still enjoy looking looking at the 18" dish bolted to the wooden 4x4 post that I lovingly concreted into the ground with the hopes of having some TV signal coming into the house. When I installed the small dish and fine-tuned everything, it worked like it was promised. I don't think that I slept well for a few nights.
A few months ago I saw bolted onto the side of a house a 3 foot dish with the words "Fortec Star" on the face. I googled fortec star and found out that having free to air Tv didn't mean having to have a 7' dish any more. With the technology of 1996, we now can receive, in our homes, with a small investment, Television from Space! (echo "Space" 3 times).
While Googling stuff about Free to Air I came upon the Sadoun Store and the Forums. Naturally I signed up to read and post, so that I can learn as much as I can about Television from Space! (no echo this time).
I am going to purchase the equipment and post questions and finds very soon. I hope to be an asset to all of the fine people that read and post to these forums, as you folks have already been a big help to me with the few questions that I have had.
Thank You Very Much
powrline (Bill)

Greetings,
I'm new to these forums. I've been using a BUD for about 15 years (12'Paraclipse) upgraded to 4DTV a few years back. Due to the ever increasing changes in programming I'm thinking of moving to a small dish capable of US and international stations. I'll be posting for info in regards to this.

Always interested in the 2 spellings for that word, ie Allegheny vs Allegany. I grew up in Pgh, in Allegheny county, and spent a lot of time in the Allegheny river, but the Allegheny river goes through the Allegany Indian (Senecas I think) near the NY/Pa border, and there is an Allegany state park there too. So I've assumed that Allegany referred to the Indian tribe, and Allegheny referred to the river, but nevery quite understood where the Allegheny spelling came from. Perhaps just pronounciation? Strange that in Md they'd use the spelling most found up by NY, rather than the spelling found further south in the Pgh area, although looking at a map, I did see an Allegheny Mountain near Cumberland.
EDIT: I just remembered, the actual indian tribe was called the CornPlanters, so maybe Allegany was their name for the mountains? Allegany is the name for their reservation, which the Allegheny flooded out about 2/3 of back in the 60s. I remember driving through a small town a couple years before they closed the dam, and the residents were none too happy. The Corn Planters did benefit though because they now own prime waterfront on the lake, however I think they preferred that their land not be flooded. Interestingly, the dam was intended as flood control for Pgh, but a couple years after it was completed they had the 2nd worst flood ever in Pgh. They apparently didn't let the water out of the dam before flood season, so that there would be more lake for recreation, so the dam didn't help. Another example of COE wisdom.

Well, to tell you the truth, I believe that I used the wrong Allegany to represent the Allegheny Mountains, which is a mountain range that runs from Maine (I believe) down to Georgia. However, Cumberland Maryland is located in Allegany County, Maryland.
Isn't Pittsburgh in Allegheny County?
I have lived here for only 6 and a half years, so I am not a Native of the Allegheny Mountains, but I love being here now.
Cheers,

I happened to notice this morning that you were about to reach a milestone in the amount of posts that you have made on the forum, and while looking around, the home page had you listed as the top poster. Normally I wouldn't have said anything about your 3000th post coming up, but I thought that it would be fun to just "Wave a Flag".
Alot of help I have gotten over the past 2 weeks that I have been on the forum was from posters, like you, who have taken to helping Newbies like myself and others in their quest for a hobbie as rewarding as Satellite Tv.
Grab a dish, point it at the sky, find the signal, translate it into TV or Radio. Sounds easy, doesn't it? With the help of passionate hobbyist like you guys and gals, is becomes easier.
Yodelling a happy tune...

I assume that the range from Maine to Georgia is Appalacians. I think that the Allegany (or Allegheny?) mountains is kind of the western most ridge of the Appalacians, but I don't think it has the full north/south range of the Appalacians. I think the Allegany mts are mainly from NY-Pa-Md/WV.
Yeah, Pgh is in Allegheny county, named for the river, which has it's headwaters in the Allegany mountains in northern Pa.
Out of curiosity, I just did a Google, and came up with one of those Wikopedia things that said that there were 3 different spellings in use, all of which implied the same thing, just different ways of spelling it. So I guess there wasn't anything interesting about the spelling.
