What do I need to start?

I have studied until my eyes are falling out and sort of understand some of it. I wanna FTA TV. I live in a motorhome full-time and it has an 18" D* Winegard dish on top that is manual alt/az. Will this work for Ku FTA? I can pick up reliably Direct TV schedule and the freebee channels on a Hughes receiver. What else can I get of other sats? I have Lyngsat on bookmark and it says, I think, that AMC and Encore(west) is available unencrypted. That true?

That ought to be enough for starters. Thanks in advance.

Karl

Welcome, Karl:

Some of the more experienced old hands around here can give you more info, but from my perspective the FTA signals are a lot weaker than the Dish and DirecTV signals, so your 18" dish is probably not going to be big enough.

Also, as you look at Lyngsat, bear in mind that only the five digit frequency transponders (e.g., 11720) are Ku, the ones with four digits (e.g., 3980) are C-band and will require a dish that's a wee too much for a motor home (like 8 to 10 feet in diameter).

I'm a camper myself, although with a fiberglass trailer rather than a motor home, and I've thought about toting an FTA receiver and dish with me, but the "persnickitiness" of aligning the dish might make for a frustrating camping trip. It just isn't as easy as aligning a subscriber satellite antenna (especially if you have one of those fancy jobs with GPS and gyros and who knows what)!

I might give it a try, though, since I've gotten pretty adept at aligning my dish at home. It would be nice to have something beyond snowy/ghosty local TV when camping (although I really don't like TV at all when I'm "roughing it", but my wife...well...)

Anybody else RV with an FTA setup?

Bob

like Bob said an 18 inch dish won't get you much you will need at least a 30 inch dish to receive ku signals.also check on lyngsat some of the feeds are in digicipher mode you can not receive these with a fta receiver.

Thanks for the quick come back, guys! What can I pick up on the 18" dish and the Hughes D* receiver (already on board) besides the D* schedule? Am I to conclude that Dish and D* xpdrs are higher wattage than FTA satellites?

If you sub to whatever receiver your have DTV or DN you can receive that. Yes they are pumped up to compensate for the pizza pan size dish. If you wish to go FTA you will need an entire system.
