Internet Exploder on my Windoze machines, mostly because they've made it so that you can't truly get rid of it...
Firefox on the Linux machines.
...but there's no "both" option on the poll. So, I picked Firefox -- there are four times as many Linux boxes as WinXP boxes in my house.

FireFox or Internet Explorer
My primary browser is Opera as I like the tabbing better and the ability to "continue from last time" when I have to shut it down to re-boot etc. Other than that, Firefox due to speed. Only use IE when "forced" to because the site will only work with it.

The Truth
the Truth of the whole matter is preference what looks, feels, features..
all OS's Stink and all computers do what ever you program them to do.
i work on all OS's and platforms and found that they all have thier pluses and minus's. web browsers are all HOGS due to the fact that almost all web sites are bloated with more graphics then are really needed, java script, vb script, perl script yadi yadi yadi......
Back When..."the back in the day statement" the internet was not as commercial as it is now, all you needed was a shell account and a text based web browser such as lynx. you could get info and porn and programs.....at a rate that was uncomprehensible....now you need some sort of broadband lighting speed to just check your email...
sure it's all nice that computers and software has matured to a level..
"what level i'm not sure..." just remember the more you want it to do for you, the thicker the it's gets...
RISC or CISC which do you prefer......
LESS IS MORE..... Just my humble input....

Mozilla
I switched to Linux several years back which eliminates Explorer, and although I dabble with Firefox I still tend to migrate back to Mozilla out of familiarity.

I know this is a VERY OLD thread, but I've been browsing through things I hadn't looked at before and came across this.
ANYWAY, boy do I agree with the above (except that I prefer Mozilla over Firefox). Of course, you can't get rid of Explorer, but as long as you don't use it, you'll save yourself a LOT of headaches.
I occasionally run one of those spyware programs to look for spyware, and only rarely find any. If I run IE, only for a few minutes, I'll almost always end up with spyware showing up on my computers. It's also MUCH worse since I started using XP. Even with IE, when I was still using Win98 or Win2k, I wouldn't attract much spyware, but the combination of XP and IE is just a magnet for that stuff.
I also avoid the Microsoft mail programs, for similar reasons.

I too come from the days of the 300 baud modems. This was before Netscape folks and those of you who not even know what Netscape is we are talking eons before IE.
I have found most of what kills load time on any site is 2 main items. First and the most deadly is client side scripting/applets. All you need is a poor programmer and your site comes to a halt not to mention no control over client side of things (hardware wise). Just plain poor design IMHO. Look how many jumped onto the Java bandwagon like it is something good. Only thing good about Java is portability but the costs of that portability just do not seem to be worth it IMHO.
Second is graphics. Not the quantity but the quality. I have seen animations that could be done with less than 10% of file size used to create. Again poor programming. A little money invested into fair to decen | |
