i check out the forums these are people who has used the equipment and have dealt with the retailers. so you get alot of useful info for how it's going to work and how good of service you will receive from the retailer. my two cents.

I still avoid eBay as much as possible. I have bought on eBay ofcourse, but it is usually not my first choice.
I am still B&M type of guy. I like to see something in person before I buy. Thing I cannot get locally (or can get a much better deal online), I usually try to research what experience others have had with a retailer. First time I buy from an unkonwn source I like to use temp card number issued by my credit card company. After I experience the reliability for my self (like with Sadoun ) I get a little more comfortable ordering.

I generaly reaserch a subject that I have no real experince in untill Im blue in the face.
google, fourms, mainifactures sites, perfesional equipment manifactures sites, fourms were prefesionals talk about the subject. rediculius really, it takes me way to long to actually purchase.
I do like to use ebay as a gage, I look for what I want and add alot of the items to my watch item list and let the auctions end to see what the "used" price is going for. This with MSRP and discount sellers prices gives me a good idea what Im going to be willing to spend for an item.
I hope this helps.

I did E-Commerce programming before it was even called E-Commerce. Have shopped online since it's earliest years. I generally stick with known companies. In the case with my start into FTA I went with the cheapest receiver. Figured I couldn't get burned any worse than that.
A phone call to see if they actually answer the phone as a business. Is sales, customer support, management, stock room help all the same person lol and are they trying to hide it. Site appearance weighs heavy with me also. Do they look like a company that actually exists or are they using a out of the can website with a little branding?

My satellite shopping has to be done online as I don't live in a city with those options. E-bay is out, too many layers of complexity, paypal, ebay, seller, trying to return or get money back is pretty tough.
I do most of my research on satellite forums, usually take comments from long time familiar face users who have the equipment I'm interested in purchasing as fact, and over time(usually a long time), I make my decision. Some forums, not this one, do reviews and although helpful, they focus on the plusses of the equipment. I need to know what drawbacks the equipment has, forum feedback is the best way to find that.
I almost always end up buying from well established online businesses that will be there if problems arise.
BTW Like the new forum upgrade!!

Do you think we should add a Product Review section for each forum or just make one general section for all reviews?

FTA/mpeg2 equipment review section would be great, I would think the one section would be enough.

Thanks for the new forum, nice addition.
Rainman, I like your avatar, is that a picture of your car after the "deer" repairs?
I notice I've lost my addict status and am now a rising star

No kidding? Really? I was just about to get jealous about it...
Nice car, to be sure. My first car was a '74 Duster -- when I got it, it had a 318 (standard intake, single rochester 2-bbl carb). A year later, it was a regular muscle car [I had a friend who worked at a local body shop, and he had connections to get me some spare parts...] I had the engine bored out to 360, and could swap between the original intake/carb, the 340 "six pack", or the (gas-guzzling) 360 "competition" hi-rise Edelbrock manifold with 2 holley 4-bbl double-pumper carbs. Was fun to drive, but the back end was so iffy... I swear, it'd start hydroplaning if there were clouds in the sky! Anyway.. clocked at 143 on radar. Umm.. no, no ticket.
My avatar is the result of two hours on the roof with the package of goodies Sadoun sent me last week.
