Hiya...Long Time No Post!

Just a quick note to say howdy to my friends and colleagues here at Sadoun.net. I still drop by and read the occasional post, and yes, I'm still scanning the Clarke belt for interesting stuff, but my time has become incredibly regimented. This past spring I finished grad school (hey, it only took me 25 years to complete my undergrad, so the eight years for grad school was a snap) and now I'm teaching community college days and working at the local public radio station nights. Needless to say, this leaves little time for TV, ham radio, satellites, camping, biking, or much else.

Anyhoo...just wanted to say "hi" and wish everyone well!

Bob

How about a Ph.D.? If this trend continues, it shouldn't take more than four years.

I think I'm about "researched" out for the time being. If I could do a PhD without a dissertation, that would be swell. But, while I'm wishing for things that aren't going to happen...why not wish for lottery winnings?

The actual dissertation wasn't a problem for me, but defending it was. Years ago, back in the late 70s I think, there was a big movie that dealt with some guy defending a dissertation with some stubborn Profs on his committee, and the guy gets up on a desk and starts yelling..... well that almost happened to me. After having a 300+ page dissertation printed, one guy on my committee decides that he thinks I needed to insert a figure up around page 50, which resulted in me having to change the page numbers from there on. This was back before there were PCs or word processors. Everything was typed onto offset printing masters, and my research director was going out of the country for a year the next day, and I had sold my home, and had a job lined up, and if I couldn't get the thing fixed within 24 hours it wouldn't happen. I just about went ballistic at the guy, but it all worked out.

It took me 7 years for the PhD BTW, mainly because I'm a dunce when it comes to languages, and German was a prerequisite for science majors, and it took me 7 years to pass a test showing that I could at least translate 1 page with a German/English dictionary. I think they eventually just wanted to get rid of me, because a friend, who could actually speak German failed the same test they passed me on.

But yes, I understand the "researched out" thing.
