SHVIA woes
Yesterday I found a letter from my landlord on my door.
Quote:
This letter is in regards to our resident John Doe. Permission is granted to install a satellite dish, [they highlighted and circled this next part] no larger than 18 inch. so long as the fixture is in NO WAY ATTACHED TO THE BUILDING STRUCTURE. If this policy is not followed, a member of management will remove it. If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to contact us at (123) 456-7890.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

I figured I was pushing my luck with the 6 footer, so I took it down. The 80cm dish remains on its tripod until they convince me that their rule is SHVIA compliant or they act like they'll pull the "we can terminate your lease for no reason, you have 30 days to move" routine.
Of course the dishes were in an area I've always understood to be my "exclusive use", they even charged extra for my fenced patio when I signed the original lease years ago. I didn't even have to drill holes in the wall - I just helped plug the gap around the air conditioner's copper lines.
(Not that I didn't want to move anyway.)

that's a shame.

You might read:
FCC Fact Sheet on Placement of Antennas
This document makes it clear that they cannot restrict dishes of 1M or less in an area that is for your exclusive use. This would seem to make their restriction to 18" invalid, which I would think would make the whole thing invalid. Ie since they only mentioned 18", then that aspect of the lease would seem to be invalid, and I would think your 6' dish would even be permitted. It seems pretty clear though that they can't stop a 1M dish, unless I'm missing something.

I think it would be rather nifty if someone could calculate the placement of several 39" dishes in order to collectively reflect a reasonable signal for C-Band reception. Maybe the individual panels are just too curved/small/? to make this possible, but even if it took 30 of em, properly placed in some weird mount in order to make it work, it might actually pass the OTARD rules *LOL* If so, I betcha HOA's would be glad to let a single 8ft dish be mounted instead of 30 small dishes

That has been suggested many times, and I guess it's possible, and I think you'd only need 4 or 5 of the 3' dishes if you phase it right. There seems to be at least two ways to phase them, either by placement, as you say, or by adjusting the length of the feed line between them. I guess I had always thought of using the second way, which always seemed kind of difficult considering the wavelengths involved, but I guess you could do fine adjustments by moving the individual dishes around, closer and further from the sat by fractions of inches. Perhaps you could mount 4 dishes on a track that would allow you to move the dishes forward or back slightly without changing the aim, then you could just nudge each dish a bit along the track to phase them. Seems like this would have to be done separately for each sat though.
A lot of work, but it would be a way to get revenge against some HOA or something.

Is the dish on your exclusive use?
If so what they are trying to do is ILLEGAL
I have been on both sides of the fence (as a resident and the VP of our HOA) and as long as it is your exclusive use or there is a rule on where dishes can be placed as long as its less than one meter they CANNOT restrict it. The old president of our HOA tried the same thing. But they screwed up and said it "had to be mounted on the edge of the roof or the deck" so I showed them OTARD and kept my 3 dishes up there.
I've since removed 2 and put up a T90, 36" and 6 footer on the deck. Except for the 6 footer I'm protected but its on my deck which is MINE and you cannot see the dishes from the road as there is a huge tree and a townhouse divider in the way
I guess we need to know if this is on your exclusive area or not.

why did you call it SHVIA?
SHVIA is the ability to get local channels through a satellite provider (SHVIA is from 1999)

Easily confused when worrying about other things... OTARD is what I wanted, yes?
While restricting the dish size is in all likelihood illegal, telling me I am no longer welcome to live here probably isn't. The dish issue is moot, for this location, if I must move.

I talked to the apartment management folks today. At first the staff told me anything more than 18 inches "must go" so I returned with a printout from the FCC site and my previous letter to them on the subject. As the manager was out of the office I dropped off the paperwork and left.
Shortly after this the manager called me verify the 6 foot dish is gone and to say that the 80cm dish is ok.
