Trees

I have a number of trees obscuring my southern skyview

Here are the two photos that cover true south, from Columbus, Ohio:

More photos at http://2150.teched.net/~jacob/satellite/ (from roughly horizon to horizon)

Please let me know what you think my reception capabilities (80cm dish) are.

(Hint: I am surprised at how much I get)

you may be able to get a few birds between the trees if you have the room to move farther away from the trees you may be able to shoot over them.

I'm going to guess...

I'm going to guess that you do pretty good! Sometimes looks are deceiving.

I'm quite proud that I get as much as I get considering a "professional" DTV installer told me there was no way I'd get anything...

http://pumanews.com/trees

BTW, how are things in Columbus?? Hope to get back there sometime in the next few months... I have an cubical downtown that I better stop and make sure is still there.... I gave up my apartment in Dublin a year and a half ago.. (Actually I was in town for a meeting a few weeks ago, and stood on the 24th floor and looked down on the Santa Maria which looks like it isn't being maintained too well )

I got sent to Moundsville, WV for "a few weeks" in October 2004, and a few weeks is just ending ... Anyway, coming back to Columbus will be nice, although not as enjoyable now that Fudruckers is gone...

I hate 'em trees

My neibourgh cut some of them down at his place.. and trimmed down lots of branches too.. - so now it became somewhat better (during spring/summer) for me

Al,
You may not have view of any DTV sats at your location. I assume that was what he was referring to and not the entire arc.

I played for awhile with a small 18" dish myself and did manage to lock onto DTV 110. It was OK, not real strong, but it did work... (of course that was a few years ago and the trees continue to grow)

As you mention, Prob not be able to get much else in the DBS world. I'm pretty sure that was the only DTV I could get..

teched will become famous soon enough
What I get, even with all those trees:

61.5 Echostar 3
72.0 AMC 6
79.0 AMC 5
82.0 Nimiq 2
85.0 AMC 2
87.0 AMC 3
89.0 Galaxy 28
91.0 Galaxy 11 and Nimiq
93.0 Galaxy 26
95.0 Galaxy 3C
110.0 EchoStar 8/10
113.0 SatMex 6
119.0 EchoStar 7

I'm not talking stellar performance here... but enough to be reliably watchable most days. If the winds are heavy all bets are off.

Problem satellites:
74.0 SBS 6, can be iffy
97.0 Galaxy 25, not much comes in (11999H sometimes) and nothing reliable
101.0 AMC 4, nothing
103.0 AMC 1, nothing
123.0 Galaxy 10R, only 11805H and 12114V, both very poorly

Haven't really tried these much:
99.0 Galaxy 16
105.0 AMC 15
107.3 Anik F1/F1R
116.8 SatMex 5
127.0 Galaxy 13
129.0 EchoStar 5
148.0 EchoStar 1/2

I am pleasantly surprised at how much I can get, but will move the tripod around as best I can on my patio (I am limited so such so long as I live in this apartment) until I've found Galaxy 10R and to a lesser degree Galaxy 25.

The biggest let down is that I let those trees scare me off for 4+ years.

Have you given Ted's Montana Grill a try? Two in the Columbus area: downtown near Nationwide Arena and Dublin, barely, at Sawmill and Martin (just south of 161). Other locations across much of the US.

I'd not been back to a Fudruckers since eating at Ted's.

Oh yes, I've been known to walk over to Ted's at lunchtime and grab myself a Buffalo Burger. Of course, if I had my choice I would eat at the Mongolian BBQ everyday and have a cocktail after work at FrogBear, especially in the Summer so I can sit outside on the patio. (but a group of us goes and we take turns picking "lunch spots").

Now, If they would just let you walk across the tracks again!!!!!

I gave up my apartment in town a year or so ago so I stay in Dublin most of the time I'm in town (at the Intown Suites on Bethel & Sawmill).. That way, I can be close to MicroCenter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Autumn is here and has taken down enough leaves for me to get 97 and 123 again.

Last weekend brought some glimpses of 97 and finally enough signal to watch something this weekend. The shot to 123 runs through more trees and occasionally drops or pixelates.

Once all the leaves are down I'll move the tripod a bit to see if my view is being obscured by limbs.

I've been waiting my self for enough leaves to fall to get 43w again.

Speaking of trying to clear (see over) trees and buildings, etc...

Is it true/correct that the elevation setting for your location and sat you want to pick up is "as-is?"

Meaning, say for my location I want to pick up a sat and I find that my elevation needs to be set at 30 degrees... That means if I mount the dish as far back as possible to clear trees/buildings to the south and doing some math/geometry if the tree is lower than 30 degrees from my position, I am "good-to-go?"

Is it that simple?

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. ie you're talking about picking up "a sat", not saying if you're talking about your due south sat, ie it might be a sat to your east or west, also because you mention an elevation of 30, it can't be a sat to your south. But then you're talking about clearing trees/buildings to your south? Hopefully you're looking up the Az/El of the sat, and looking to see if you can clear the trees in the direction indicated by the azimuth for that sat, not just looking south. I'm sure you're probably doing it right, but I wasn't sure from the way the question was worded.
