Super Dish

I have A superdish from dishnetwork which enables me to get some subscribed arabic channels. I was wondering, If I aim it to T5 at 97W, will I be able to receive any FTA Arabic Channels from Intelsat Americas 5 with this superdish ?

"subscribed" that is... =P~ , as one "prescribes" generally something like medication (the prescription) ;-)

The Superdish is big enough for IA5. However, you will need to use the LNBF that is marked for 105 or 121. That is a STANDARD lnbf with an L.O. freq of 10750

Dishnetwork's superdish is actually 36” wide by just over 20” tall. And you are right, you need at least a 30" dish for T5.

Now here is a tricky question and excuse my ignorance on topic since I have no experiecne with wide dishes.

If the dish is 36"x20", will you get a better signal on horizontal transponders than on vertical?

Hmmm... interesting question. I suspect they take that into consideration when designing the dish. It is probably engineered to provide maximum gain on both polarities.

I believe the shape has to do more with hitting multipple sats than transponders.

I might be wrong!!!

Well that's kind of what I was trying to get at. Superdish was designed to be 36" wide to allow multiple sats to be tuned in easier. It is only 20" high since Dish sats are strong and don't require too big of a dish.

If it is used for lower power Ku sats, looking at how horizontal signal travels in horizontal pattern and vertical travel in vertical pattern, I was guessing that maybe it has a stronger reception on horizontal sats as it covers more area.

IF you look on some gas stations, sometimes you will see satellite dishes that are not even oval shape but more like a rectangular. I always tought these are only for one polarity since the service they are using for their data is probably on one polarity.

No, you are right. That is why they are oval shaped. Its interesting though that a 20" high dish can get good signal from FTA satellites like T5, etc.

Guess what! I just realized today that I'm actually missing all H tansponders on T5. So that puts a whole new twist on your theory :-)

With my 36" oval dish, I should be picking more H transponder, but it's the opposite.

Since superdish is Dishpro, I tried converting the H transponders to V by substracting 25600, but that didn't help. I'm now thinking it might be the cable.

Superdish is using Dishpro technology. So it receives only vertical polarity tp's

Superdish

I know this thread is old. Sorry. But it's on topic :mozilla_sealed:
I have an existing DishNetwork installation with a Superdish. I think it's the 105. I want to drop DishNetwork and repoint the dish at IA5 and put in 3 FTA receivers. This is my first attempt at FTA.

Will this work?
Do I need anything else?
I believe there is a multi-switch. Do I need this? Will it work?
Which receiver is a good choice for primarily Arabic channels?
Did I miss anything?

TIA,

-kp

Most of the Arabic channels are available on IA5. You just need one universal LNBF with four output ports. You will probably get 60% of the channels. Try a universal LNBF first with the current super dish. It should work, the signal strength depens on the dish surface area.
