Telestar 5

Hello:
Does anyone loses the signal on TLS 5 whenever it rains ( not even hard, just like a shower). I live in Boston and on regualr cloudy or shiny day, on channel 2M for exemple, I get a signal up to 87% and a picture quality of 78%, no trees or house bocking the reception, but when it rains or just drizzles sometimes, the quality dropps to half and the only channels I can get are Tunisia and EL Alam. (just these 2)
I tried to move both the dish and the LNFB on every possible position, but I couldn't get a better signal or quality. Does anyone know what needs to be done in order to get more channels on good or bad weather.
Your help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jalili

PS: I would also like what percentage quality+ signal every one is getting.

What you are experiencing is called "rain fade" and it is a fact of life with KU band satellite TV. You can't eliminate it -- merely minimize it. The quality reading you are getting is very good for T5. I only get around 40-50 % where I am. All you can do is make sure the dish is precisely aligned and also make sure the LNB skew is properly set. Of course, a bigger dish will give you better signal and quality and thus reduce rain fade.

BTW -- congratulations on becoming our 10,000th forum member !!! :P I think Sadoun has a nice prize waiting for you...

Re: Telestar 5

I think you have here a very good strength for t5
I have here in Montreal on 2M transponder 65% and 70% for quality level

Beside what every one said another reason for that could be the lnb. Some lnb's can not handle low temp and would mess up when they get cold. Try to use different lnb and see next time what will happen.

Thanks for your reply. But, it has been snowing here where I am a lot for the past 2 weeks, and the temp sometimes is below 0, so eventhough when it snows the quality for all transponders does not go below 75%, but it the weather warms up and it starts raining it drops to 50-40% and the picture starts shaking.
I just got a bigger dish and I have a quality of 95% on a clair day for chanels like TV7, 2M, El ALam, Dubai....I'm thinking that all channels that come on band K are originaly weak, and ain't not can do about it.

jalili;

Do this. Check the quality readings of all the HORIZONTAL transponders and then all the VERTICAL transponders. If all the HOR or all the VER are noticeably weaker than the opposite polarity ones then your dish is not aimed quite right. Also make sure the skew is set right for your area.

Rain issue

I live in boston too. I have 76cm dish, I never had any issues with the temps, but hard rain does affect the reception. In sunny days The quality is more than 95% (depending on the transponder ofcource). Try increasing the quality of your signal on good days, that might help. I was told that a larger dish will minimize this effect. however, I didn't lose the signal over the past 3 weeks, when we had lots of rain ice and tons of snow.

I just wanted to drop off a little note to thank all of you guys for your significant comments and suggestions. I'm keeping my fingers crossed so far so good for the past 3 or 4 weeks like you said I haven't lost the signal since I replaced the dish by a larger one. But, before if even the little drizlling will make it go. Some channels like Algeria would come only during the day but not at night. But, after adjusting the dish, the quality increased to 98% for some transponders ( 2M, TV7...)
Thanks,
Jallili
