American TV Here you could discuss what is available as FTA American channels on satellite. No discussion of hacking encrypted channels or know how related to that matter is allowed. Discuss only channels that have been listed publicly on lyngsat. Non-public FTA channels should be discussed in the New Finds forum only.

FTA on DN 7 at 119

In looking at Lyngsat, there seems to be a few TV and several radio channels that are shown as "F".

I've seen the same thing on other sats, but, with the the first bar on each frequency showing Digicipher II, meaning that those cannot be received directly on my Fortec.

In several frequencies on 119, there are these "F" such as 12253-R-20000. There are 4 TV channels shown as "F". The first bar shows Nagravision 2. Does this mean that the whold mux is actually Nagravision 2 or are those channels actually Free-To-Air if I had a circular LNB?

There are many radio channels that would follow the same pattern. I was wanting to get a quad LNB from Sadoun that will receive both Linear and Circular signals if I could in fact get these channels. If they are not actually available free then I probably would not spring for the money since there would not be anything else other than promos.

Thanks!

The dishnet channels can generally be received if they are not encrypted.
HOWEVER....
(1) Lyngsat is not always up to date. For example, I think there are a couple channels on the 110 sat that Lyngsat says are free, but they aren't, plus some free things come and go.
(2) Some Dishnet things are 8psk, so those channels can't be received by most receivers even if free.
(3) Some Dishnet transponders are spot beams. For example, the Miami channels. I don't know if they are actually fta or not, because anywhere other than the southeast, you'd pick up one of the other spot beams using that frequency, so most people can't receive those channels.

The free channels (Miami Stations) mentioned on this post are actually beamed at South Florida.

Much of what is listed as "F" comes in great with a circular polarity LNB and the correct settings. Unfortunately, the only channel that I wanted from their sats was BYUTV, and although it has been listed as "F", it definitely is not. (thus, the weather needs to get nice for a few days so that I can get out and mount some of the FTA dishes that I've bought in the last couple weeks!)

I didn't even notice that the nets that I looked at were a spot beam. Looks like I will leave things as they are.

Another sat I already point to has lots of FTA radio so that would really be the only thing I would want off of there.

Thanks!

Last time when I was watching BYU, it was available (on Ku - band) from SatMex5.
You will need to switch to mono, because one of audio channels is constantly announcing "this is Brigham - Young University channel...". There are several audio tracks available.
For Dish channels, I usually use "Scan FTA channels only" option and blind-scan. After 20 min. "cooking", you may see about 6 - 10 channels, most of which are mirrors of "101 channel", and you will delete these right away.
Sometimes however, they put some test channels in the clear.

I hope Satmex 5 is doable with a 36" dish from Southern Iowa... otherwise I have a lot of FTA equipment that I don't need.
