GNF Movies on 97.0W

Does anyone know the audio pid?

Blind scan finds the channel with a hiss for audio.

Probably a problem from the station..I have no sound either, the automatic audio PID is actually 2082...

I'm not sure if this is a factor or not, but it does seem to be a silent movie.
Perhaps their projector just puts out static for silent movies???

Yea, The silent movies have a slight hiss. So does all other programing. If I change the audio pid the it's dead silent which I assume means I have the wrong audio pid altogether.

If anyone knows how to get audio out of this channel that would be great. Looks like they have some good stuff sometimes.

They've had nothing but a slight hum for audio for almost a week now. I was going to post a query about this, but you beat me to it!

I used TSREADER, and checked for "unknown" streams that might be the missing audio, and there were none on that transponder. Also checked every FTA audio stream associated with other programs, and none of them correspond to this channel, although there were a couple that were blank. So, as you say, it seems to be a problem with the channel.

Talking Let There Be Sound! (...and a quick story)

Their audio is back. I don't know if it helped, but I sent a "I'm a broadcast engineer and I noticed you have a problem" e-mail. I know that conventional wisdom says FTA viewers shouldn't contact programmers, but, I figured it couldn't hurt in this instance.

Which reminds me of a totally unrelated story...

About 25 years ago I was enjoying a massive VHF TV band opening. About 2 o'clock in the morning I picked up a San Antonio, TX station's test signal. On a whim, I decided to call 'em up to let them know how pretty their color bars were in New Orleans. An engineer actually answered the phone at that ridiculous hour, but for some reason he very nervously protested, "But I have the ID up!!"

Seems he associated New Orleans with a certain government agency's field office. When I explained that I was just a nutjob TV DXer, he let out a long sigh and said, "Oh thank God! I thought you were the FCC!"

There are two things I am not comfortable with on this channel:
one, sometimes the movies are for widescreen TV and image appears "squished" from both sides.
Second, sometime there is a low pitch hum, when showing old movies.
Same hum is heard on White Springs. (BTW, White Springs has 3 audio tracks now:left, right, and second Audio PID, stereo)

I actually have an original Charlie Chaplin movie. Back in the 30s and early 40's, they used to sell 16mm versions of movies for people with projectors. I guess this was the precursor to selling VCRs and DVDs of movies. :-) . My movie is called "Laughing Gas", and shows Charlie invading a dentist's office and flirting with a pretty girl waiting to have a tooth pulled, then gets caught and chased by police, etc. Pretty funny. Still watch it occasionally with the same old 1930's era projector.
I've been trying to figure out some affordable way to convert these things to video. I bought a mirror/screen device that you aim both the projector and a video camera at, but it didn't work very well. So far best results obtained by projecting on a big piece of white card board, and videotaping from that. Slightly oblong view from being off angle a bit, but not too bad.

...you might as well go one step in technology farther, now. Record it on a digital video camera, and burn it to DVD.
