I believe they are for the two types of mounting arm types. Some dishes have 3 arms and others have 4. So you would either have holes that are 90 degrees apart or 120 degrees. Not sure on button hook. I have one but have not really payed that much attention to how the scalar ring mounts as personally I just don't like how a button hook looks
