Network search basically uses some of the information included with the transponder to locate, store, and then scan for new channels.
Lets say, company ABC owns 5 transponder on a satellite. But out of the 5, your receiver has only on transponder saved in it by the factory. If company ABC includes information that it has 5 total transponders with its datastream, the receiver will get that information and save it to your receive.
