It was my understanding that the receiver they were planning to release in NA is not the same as the Passion thing. When it was on their web page, they didn't refer to it as the Passion, and they were promising that it would do more than just 4.2.0 QPSK, which I assume is why they are delayed in it's release.
But re mpeg2 HD being obsolete, I think that depends on what your viewing interests are. For the things I watch, I don't think it is obsolete, and isn't likely to be for the near future, although QPSK is on it's way to being obsolete.
