Wi-Fi and C-Band dishes

Hi all,

In the latest Tele-Satellite magazine, there was an article about people using prime focus C-band dishes for extending the Wi-Fi range (some claim up to several miles). Anyone tried that? What type of setup have you seen?

The articals Ive seen online they didnt use Cband size dishes.
it was large Ku band dishes at best. And the range was up to 3 miles If I remember right.

actually.. UHF can be picked up VERY well with 7foot+ size dishes. Channelmaster used to produce one of the most db gain antennas (acutally it still hasnt been beat for pure db gain) and it was simply a 7' prime focus dish (open wire design so even less effective then say one of your dishes) and a small UHF dual 1/4 length diapole antenna with a flat panel reflector (like one of the radio shack specials LOL) in the LNB position.

If Im not mistaking WIFI uses 50 Ohm feedline..

Ive done some studying on antenna design.

Wi-Fi dishes

Best type of dish antenna for Wi-Fi would be a grill type antenna. Those can be found on Ebay relatively cheap and they are already in the 2.5/2.7gig frequency range which will work good with access points if doing point-to-point wireless data.

We have gotten around a solid 12mile range, horizontal polarized with these 55db gain grill type antennas. Access point (linksys) placed on the back of the dish, so no coax feed line loss to speak of. Just program Linksys to use only one of the antenna ports (no diversity).

Yep, I have seen those grill type dishes with an access point placed on the pole. They seem to work very well.

how good are the cantenna/super cantennas that are being talked about? you stated that you have gotten a solid 12 mile range with this type grill dish,is that the 24dbi dish, cause that's all i have been able to find on ebay and they start around $45.00 US currency. i have seen the 19dbi and 24dbi but no 55db that is spoken of!

When I think "grill type" I am thinking UHF.. and the dipoles are too long not to mention there isnt much in the way of directivity (wich would cause such boosts in db.).. I would think they would need considerable modification for this purpose (or someone would have to design one with this in mind)

Ive seen something like a have cylender grill with director on ebay.. no measurements to speek of on the directors elements or the di-pole.. just the auctions claim that it was desinged for whatever use they claim.. I want a pdf and dememtions, not to mention some form of testing before I would buy it.

the cantennas cant compair to something like this.. they are good compared to what your given but the design just cant give you the physics..
I would really like to see the results from sadoms 6footer though

I thought this was an interesting website pertaining to 802.11b and dishes. Take a look at http://trevormarshall.com/lapierre.htm.

I am wondering if a small power amp of some sort could added cheaply to get more distance.
