It will not lose its memory when unplugged.
THere is an internal battery that does keep volatile data stored if the unit is unplugged. One of those items is the digital system's serial number (unit ID). If the system board battery goes dead and you unplug, that number can get corrupted and it will no longer be good for DCII digital channels.
So, yes the statement to keep it on a UPS for that reason is valid. But for best safety, the more right thing to do is change out the lithium battery every 5 to 7 years. It is not an impossilble task, but does require some disassembly and system board unsoldering.
Also, there is a way to reset the box to factory default settings. Pulling the plug should not normally activate this option, but it did do it on my 920 model. I lost all the satellite mapping and settings for where the sats were located. At that point, the solution is to point at certain satellites with maps (G1-channel 3) and let the box download the channel maps again, then resetup all the satellite postitions. A lot of busy work but not impossible.
