Schedule 40 Pipe

Just called the local steel supplier who gave me these numbers. For Schedule 40 3" (3.5" O.D.) $5.50 / ft. and for 3.5" (4" O.D.) $6.80 / ft. cut to whatever length I want. I have seen posts in the past concerning finding and costs of mounting masts for the larger dishes so I thought I would post the info.

Back when I lived closer to civilization, these places usually charged less if you bought a complete length of pipe. I forget the exact length, but I seem to remember that the pipe comes in something like 22' lengths or something real close to that. On my first dish, my friend and I bought one length and cut it in half, and ended up saving some money vs what it would cost if we had both gone there and asked for an odd length. Where I live now, there isn't a pipe supplier within about 100 miles.

(The above was after my friend tried installing his 10' dish on schedule 40 PVC Pipe... a story which I've told too many times.)

The company I work for has an account so the price quoted to me was for any length including full sticks which are as you state 22'. Steel is kinda funny. Pipe is 22', box is 24', solid round stock is 20' & not sure on flat stock.

lumpkin666 is on a distinguished road
Schedule 40 here is almost 8 bucks a foot for 4"OD in cut lengths. So after tax/etc it's easily 80+ bucks just for a post. I figure that I make 35 bucks an hour after taxes in my day job, so I can afford to spend 2-3 hours pulling a post instead of working to buy one (plus I can only work at my day job so many hours, so that 80 bucks has to come outta other fun-money!) Also by pulling the post, you can pull the concrete with it and save on the amount of concrete you have to buy/pour when planing the pole (I use less than 1/2 the amount by leaving the old stuff on there - figuring the weight will do it's trick as long as my hole is good and the pole is true before pourting fresh crete)

Schedule 40 is pretty much just the size specs, and it can come in different materials, PVC, iron, regular steel, galvanized steel, etc. My friend made the mistake of buying PVC, which obviously didn't work, and he had to switch to steel. My first dishes were on this regular steel (he and I shared a 22' length), which I think is a bit cheaper than the galvanized stuff. Couldn't find regular steel anywhere up here in Maine or New Hampshire, but managed to find some galvanized stuff. After a few years, the galvanized stuff ended up looking like the regular stuff.
