If you want to check your actuator, first disconnect all other items from the actuator. Then take the two heavier gauge wires (tprobably 12 or 14 guage - normally they are red/black and connected to M1 and M2 on your satellite receiver). Touch 1 to the negative side of a 12v car battery, and touch the other to the positive side of a 12v car battery. It should move one direction or the other (albiet slowly since you're only giving it 12v instead of 36v). To check the actuator travel in the opposite direction, can you guess what you need to to? - yep, just flip your wires around and it'll travel the other direction.
