An easy way to find the Azimuth, Elevation, and LNBF tilt for your
installation site, use this calculator:

If you can't find your city listed, just use your zip code. It will give you your location's Latitude & Longitude. Enter and click calculate.
On the Azimuth, remember to compensate for magnetic deviation for your area (see the USA map on the same page).
Also, LNBF tilt is very very important. The LNBF you are using might have an arrow on the top to indicate "TOP" or "0" tilt position. From that location you could turn it right or left to compensate for polarity skew at your area. This will make a huge difference in your Antenna Setup.
Basic 1 2 3 dish install:
1- Survey the area where to position the dish
2- The POLE must be vertical (+/- 1 degree is acceptable)
3- Point dish in Azimuth Direction
4- Adjust Elevation
5- Set LNBF Tilt.
Now for fine tuning and finding the signal:
1- If you are using the receiver and TV screen for signal meter, make sure you are using and Active transponder on the satellite you are trying to lock on (i.e. 12177 or 111898 for
Telstar 5)
2- Start by adjusting the Azimuth (right and left) until you get the quality. Peak it as high as possible. Make sure your other transponders are exhibiting a quality signal as well.
3- Now, start adjusting the Elevation up/down until you get a peaked signal. Tighten nuts/bolts.
4- Maximize signal by adjusting the LNBF Tilt (right or left 1 degree at a time).
5- Finally, maximize signal by adjusting the LNBF location in/out relative to the reflector. Tighten screw on LNBF collar.
If you use a
BIRDOG, it will make your installation much easier, specially in high places.
The secret to using the BIRDOG is that,
1- You have to know the relative azimuth and elevation for your location.
2- You have to use the KUV & KUH settings for the satellite to maximize the signal
3- The BIRDOG works with standard type LNBFs only. It does not work with Universal type LNBFs (those require a 22KHz tone that the BIRDOG does not produce).
