So I've assumed that Allegany referred to the Indian tribe, and Allegheny referred to the river, but nevery quite understood where the Allegheny spelling came from. Perhaps just pronounciation? Strange that in Md they'd use the spelling most found up by NY, rather than the spelling found further south in the Pgh area, although looking at a map, I did see an Allegheny Mountain near Cumberland.

Well, to tell you the truth, I believe that I used the wrong Allegany to represent the
Allegheny Mountains, which is a mountain range that runs from Maine (I believe) down to Georgia. However, Cumberland Maryland is located in
Allegany County, Maryland.
Isn't Pittsburgh in
Allegheny County?
I have lived here for only 6 and a half years, so I am not a Native of the Allegheny Mountains, but I love being here now.
