I've been thinking that it shouldn't be too hard to make an old computer with a rs232 serial port control a polarotor. The polarotor control is done via 5 V pulses with variable pulse width. I can't remember the frequency of the pulse, but I think it is slow enough that you might be able to turn on and off one of the rs232 handshaking lines fast enough. Would be a clunky solution compared to having a receiver doing it automatically, but it might be a cheap way.
