I have 2 MACs and 1.5 LINUX boxes sitting in a corner never used, mainly because for both, every new piece of software I'm interested in required a new version of the OS, and for the MAC this often required new hardware too. On the 6 PCs that I have running 24/7, 4 have XP, 1 1/2 have Win2K, and 1 has Win98. I also have several other computers that I occasionally use, which have Win98, Win95, Win3.2 and Dos 3.1 on them.
We have only had spyware problems on 1 computer, and that was one that my wife had running MS Outlook and IE, because it was required by here work. The other computers use other programs for internet. On the computer that had been running IE and Outlook, we'd run spyware programs and get hundreds of hits every time we checked. I haven't had a spyware hit on my other computers in a couple years. Same thing for viruses. Only virus's we've run into were on my wife's computer. Of course we have the added advantage of connecting via a poor dialup, so it makes it harder for people trying to get in, since we're seldom on the same IP# for more than a few minutes at a time.
In my opinion, it's not the OS that gives MS users problems, it's the MS applications. And it's not really that there is anything wrong with the MS software, it's just that that is what 90% of the people out there are using, so that is what the pirates are going after. If 90% of the people were using Linux or MAC, that is what would be hacked.
Anyway, I couldn't do 10% of what I do daily on the computer if I was using anything except Windows, and that includes 90% of my satellite stuff. I hate Microsoft as much as anyone, but if you switch, you're just losing too much capability.
