Smile Problems with a 4-year-old Globecast receiver

I installed a Globecast satellite & receiver in 2002. We used it for paid programming for several months & discontinued the paid service. Since then, I have occasionally used it for the free stations that Globecast has.

Starting in the fall 2006, I could no longer search for new channels on it - it would get 43% done and then stop. To fix the problem, I tried resetting the factory defaults. The same problem continues to occur.

I called Globecast technical support and they told me it is an old receiver that no longer works with their system. I would have to replace it for $130 + S/H.

I was shocked that a 4-year old receiver for which I paid over $400 would be considered "obsolete."

Is it possible to use the receiver for anything? From online postings, it appears to have been made by Eastern Electronics. The model # is SC996-T105

FYI: I am a newbie to satellites, although I was able to install this one for myself.

Thanks.

-Bob
