Is your universal remote JP1 compatable? If so, you can program in the commands. If it is not JP1, then, unless the thing comes pre-programmed with the Fortec codes and as the other response said, you should have received a list of pre-programmed devices with the remote. If Fortec isn't on the list, then you'll be stuck, and the only thing you can do is to learn the keys individually as the other response indicated, which is kind of cumbersome. You can generally tell if your remote is JP1 by looking inside the battery compartment, where JP1 remotes have a little 6 pin connector.
I use both RS 2116 and a similar OFA remote, and have the JP1 commands which work for the regular Lifetime and Lifetime Ultra, and these should work for the Classic, although I'm not positive. I don't think the 2116 is sold anymore.
