Ok Bill has one on a tree and says if you cut the tree top off the tree will no longer grow up only out. He posted pics here. You may have also seen his counterweight solution.

On a serious note I guess mounting on a tree eliminates rain fade. All the movement from the wind in a storm would simply blow it out of adjustment way before the rain caused fade
