Dish Installations from a dealer perspective.
As an installer, normally the new installs are given dish 500 hardware, but that could vary depending who the master agent is for your dealer. Some (american wireless dealers for example) are not able to get anything else, without going to a superdish which would require the user to pay extra for. Keep in mind that even the direct tv antennas will pull in the echostar signal when hooked up to a dish network install. That is good to know for existing satellite customers who are switching service. We often would offer to take down the old dish from the other service and use the units for installs when the customer requested sideband access like for local channels on 148. Dish dealers are only reimbursed for hardware for new customers they work with, so if a dish customer who purchased hardware from another dealer came in to ask for help or upgrades, we have no incentive to help them at all since they are not reimbursable to us. Which makes having a supply of these other dishes helpful since we could upgrade customers and work out a deal on the install, without costing them an arm an a leg. If you are thinking of getting dish, get the best system with options from the begining, since you can downgrade at no penalty. They are expensive to upgrade in the future if you ever need to. If using some other hardware, keep in mind dish is always with a circular LNB which normally wont work with a linear FTA LNB.
