It is certainly best to use a circular LNB, but you can usually get some signals with a linear LNB. A linear LNB receives a circular signal OK, although you lose about half the signal strength. I've picked up some music channels plus NASA TV with a linear LNB, and just this weekend, I accidently scanned in one of the PROMO channels and several radio stations on one of the NIMIQ sats while searching for some Masters Golf coverage on G11, again with a linear LNB. The thing is, that the linear LNB can't differentiate between the L/R polarized signals, any you'll usually be receiving two signals at once, getting interferrence, however sometimes you'll find a transponder that doesn't have interferrence from the other polarization, and it will come in fine. 95% of the time it will be encrypted, but sometimes you get lucky.
