I've got a couple universal remotes, but don't know the RECEIVERS codes to put in the remote to tell it to change channels. All I want this universal remote to do is change channels. If I need to do something else, I'll just go up close to the receiver and do what I need to do. One of the remotes that I've got is the DTV UNIVERSAL REMOTE, but doesn't have a code for FORTEC LIFETIME ULTRA, just thinking that if I had the receivers codes, I could program it in to see if it'll work that way. What do you guys think? THANKS
A 3 or 4 digit code like you describe is only meaningful to a specific remote, for example, I have several universal remotes, and the codes for various devices that they all have built in, is different in each. For example, for one of my remotes, Chaparral is 216, Sony is 639, RCA is 392, etc, etc. Ie, there is no universal code for Chapparal or Sony or Primstar, etc, and if there was, it would be MUCH longer than 4 digits.
Basically, those 3 or 4 digit codes just refer to a much longer code already stored in your remote. If that code isn't already in your remote, then no code will work. You could try every number from 0 to 9999 and nothing would work. That is why I recommended the JP1 remote, because most of the Universal remotes I've seen don't have a built in code for Fortec, and if they did, it might not be for the Lifetime Ultra. It is possible that the newer remotes might now have a built in Fortec code, but if it did, it will be listed in the manual you get with the remote, or in some cases some codes might not be in the manual, but can be found at the web site of the remote manufacturer.
Basically, what I did, was to use the learning functions of my remote to learn what basic type signal the Fortec remote was sending, which was a NEC1, 32 I think, then key by key I figured out the number sent for each key with that basic NEC1 system, then uploaded it to my remote, and gave it a 4 digit device number of 1786, which basically just tells the remote to use the big set of key codes that I uploaded with that number as a name. If you have a JP1 remote and cable, though, now that that work is done, you can now download that device from the JP1 web page, and won't have to go to all that work, but the Fortec device is a file, not just a 4 digit code.
So bottom line is, that it probably isn't as simple as you want it to be. And if it is, and there IS a 4 digit code for your remote, the answer to your question is in the manual for your remote, and can't be answered by someone with some other remote.
