OK; lots of satellites will be "out of reach" - in reality that means you need a dish bigger in diameter than 30" or 36" that you have now. PAS9 for example has lots of free channels (DVB) but they are on C-Band, so a big dish is needed. Even the KU band where FTA channels are available will sometimes require a 1.0 or even 1.2 meter dish.

The other thing is that not all channels are "free" - to further complicate the issue they switch between free and encrypted at odd hours during the day and night.

Check out this website - its shows all the satellites and what channels you can get for free and their various parameters (frequency, SR, polarity, etc.) www.lyngsat.com
